Marbella Club Review by Sophie Goodwin

15/03/2017, Sophie Goodwin

Set in lush gardens that open out onto the Mediterranean Sea, Marbella Club, on the coast of Spain, is the definition of an institution. Since opening its doors in 1954, this iconic luxury property has hosted the likes of Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Henry Ford and Carry Grant. As well as an A-list clientele, Marbella Club also boasts a picture perfect location, impeccable service and an impressive Thalasso Spa, specialising in treatments that harness the ancient healing powers of sea water. The club's dedicated wellness programmes have elevated this hotel to new heights as a destination spa, drawing visitors from around the world. Programmes available to guests include the Mediterranean Lifestyle, Emotional Rebalance and Body Rebalance programmes.

We recently sent Sophie Goodwin from Tatler to review the property's Mediterranean Diet & fitness programme. Here’s what she had to say about her experience.

How would you describe your experience at Marbella Club?

I found it to be calming, relaxing and it really allowed me to centre and refocus. The hotel enables you to completely detach from the outside world, it was relaxing in itself not to be able to reach for my phone as part of my digital detox.  My stay was also very educational in terms of health. I learned so much about my body and what I need to do for it to perform at its best. The experts at Marbella Club told me how to continue caring for my body following the programme, and I’ve never felt better.

What do you think makes Marbella Club so special?

The staff were all so warm and welcoming they ended up feeling like friends, there was an extremely friendly atmosphere and it helped me relax so much quicker. The incredible beach front location provided me with a breath-taking view and the history of the hotel was astounding. The food was beautifully presented and tasted even better, often times in health resorts the food can be hard to find but it was available whenever I wanted and came in a great variety.

What was your favourite treatment?

An Antique Rose Massage - a workout and a massage in one. The massage was a wonder for all the senses, the smell of rose petals and use of scented oils truly helped relax me throughout. The pressure was neither too hard nor too soft; the therapist Irina knew just what to do. I left the massage feeling refreshed, relaxed and reinvigorated.

Who was your favourite therapist and why?

My favourite therapist was Irina with whom I had an Antique Rose Massage. Irina was a truly educated therapist who took great pride in her job. I felt a real connection with Irina, she made me feel very at ease with her humour and expertise as she talked me through the treatment. She was very attentive, checking that the pressure of the massage was to my liking and not too soft or too intense. I had a great time talking to her after and found her upbeat spirit to be infectious.

What was your favourite activity and why?

I loved my core strengthening class with head trainer Daniel Blanco in the gym. Daniel was fun, knowledgeable and pushed me just the right amount so that I challenged my body and tried new exercises. Daniels approach was very light hearted and upbeat, but at the same time educational, teaching me how to exercise properly without overdoing it. Learning the techniques behind working out has helped ensure I haven’t pulled a muscle or had a sport related injury since!

What were your first impressions of the hotel?

The hotel was immediately relaxing as I was captivated by the surroundings, the décor and design are both intricate and subtle and the soft colours made the rooms feel bright and open. Another observation was that there was a return to good old fashioned service! All the staff know you by name and the distinguished waiters wear white DJs and are always smiling. It’s not often I’ve felt so welcome and at home in such a short period of time.

Outside of your room, where was your favourite place to spend time?

I really enjoyed walking around the beautiful gardens and pool area, with so many activities available and treatments to be had; sometimes you can forget how healing getting in touch with nature can be. The property is set within 42,000 square metres of exotic subtropical gardens. I also loved taking lunch at the MC Café, an informal but elegant rendezvous, which is perfect for a low calorie healthy lunch or a more formal dinner.

Who would you recommend Marbella Club to?

I would recommend the Marbella Club to everyone, especially families. The property has a great all day children’s club, which means you and your partner can relax and focus all your energy on your programmes whilst your children’s every needs and wants are taken care of. There’s more than enough to do to satisfy any kind of person, whether they’ve come to help get in shape or just enjoy some luxury pampering.

Any insider tips?

I would definitely recommend using the Thalasso pool for around 20 minutes per day. The warm salt water is cleansing and will sort your skin and mind out. I would also recommend trying to book a stay during January. The hotel is a lot quieter at this time of year, but the weather is still lovely.
