Set on the gentle slopes of a lychee and mango plantation, the dense Sal forest to its west, the hills of Mussoorie to its’ north, Vana is an international ashram, a wellness retreat, a world-class sanctuary – all healing and nourishing. Designed by Spanish architectural company Esteva i Esteva, it’s design is both dramatic and serene; sculptured sleek stone and sheer glass, modernist polished buildings with pale wooden floors, and all surrounded by a large courtyard shaded by a grove of mango trees. Bedrooms are soothing and calm - the colour scheme is muted, with wall-to-ceiling windows overlooking the trees and hills. It is the brainchild of owner Veer Singh, a perfectionist with exacting standards.

So who would Vana suit? The answer is everyone that is besieged by the challenges of living in the modern world. For Vana is a haven to escape to, to discover, to be still in, and to heal. There are no pre-determined programmes at Vana Malsi Estate; your schedule will be custom-made for you, following your in-depth consultation with one of the doctors, where you will list your goals for your stay – de-stress, detox, weight loss or maybe some natural healing. The doctors will devise a programme which will nourish you inside and out. Days are gentle: Yoga or a hike in the morning, followed by your prescribed treatments. Quiet reflection time is an important part of the healing process at Vana.

Food is artistically displayed and delicious and served to you based on your body type and the objectives of your retreat. You can choose from two restaurants - Anayu, which serves Moorish traditional Ayurveda food, and Salana, which offers a sublime variety of non-vegetarian, vegetarian and vegan food. All, of course, are locally sourced, seasonal, fresh and organic. Bread is made fresh daily, they even have their own stone mill to ensure the quality of their grounded grains. The sweet-natured waiting staff will guide you through the menu - it’s not about absence or deprivation at Vana, but sensible eating that offers a feast for the senses as well as being healing to the body.

Ayurveda healing is offered alongside traditional Chinese medicine and Tibetan healing – Sowa Rigpa. The doctors and experts are the very best you will find, no expense is spared at Vana. There are on-site nutritionists, visiting monks and experts, Sufi singing sessions and lectures. There are steam rooms, saunas, indoor and outdoor pools, infrared cabins and a well-equipped gym. In the extensive grounds, there are also tennis courts, a herb garden and lots of spots for Yoga and meditation.

The treatment menu is vast, Chi Nei Tsang, (a deep abdominal massage) with Azusa, or perhaps Watsu with Sara, where you are massaged in a warm womb-like pool until you reach a state of complete relaxation. There is stretching like you have never known before with Mayank - limb by limb, muscle by muscle, every knot kneaded until you spring back to life. The fragrant Ayurvedic oils of the heavenly four-handed abhyanga massage, (which finishes with your hair being wrapped in a saffron turban to keep your head warm), the Ku Nye massage performed by two therapists who whisper Sanskrit mantras as they press hot pods into your energy channels. There are many other massages on offer; all performed by magical hands, all from different ancient practices, all working seamlessly together, to make you whole again. All massages are listed for a purpose, all are expertly performed, and are part of your journey to improvement. Vana quite simply is exquisite, it’s a life-changing, profound experience, somewhere to connect with your inner stillness.

At Vana, the private living spaces bring together various elements of their design philosophy: contemporary aesthetics, bespoke and natural materials, exceptional comfort, thoughtful lighting, design and simplicity. The 69 rooms, 17 suites and 4 villas on the estate peer into the ancient Sal forest or the gardens and orchards, all with balconies or terraces. With a passion for ecology they have used sustainable materials where possible, including bamboo flooring, FSC certified wood and even certified organic linen. The rooms evoke a sense of harmony and wellbeing with a neutral palette of colours and art created by abstract artist Siraj Saxena, allowing guests to rest, reflect and connect with nature.

At this retreat, a nutritious culinary experience is vital for your healing process at Vana. The cuisine encourages guests to see food differently, yet delights, nourishes and heals. The chefs are masters of wellness cooking and understand the delicate balance between different ingredients, flavours, seasons and palettes, to create inspiring food that suits each guest’s body type and retreat objectives.

Guests have two restaurants to choose from:

Featuring international wellness cuisine and a live kitchen.

Vana is located in the Northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan foothills, where Hindus traditionally flock to worship on the banks of the Ganges, and where yoga fans –including the Beatles – have come to perfect their art. It’s the perfect spiritual spot, perched on a small plateau with the Sal forest to the west, the hills of Mussoorie to the north, and the small town of Dehradun to the east. Its 35km drive from Jolly Grant Airport, which you can access from London daily via Delhi.

Videos Reviews

Healing holidays were able to match me to Vana as a result of careful listening to my needs. Often hard to articulate, even though a seasoned destination spa healing holidays customer, this time my holiday needs where different.

I wasn't "on my knees" physically and emotionally exhausted in the same way I have been pre Kamalya in December. However I was searching for a place to prevent this, develop my early belief in meditation key to thriving in my busy corporate job, and to secure a deeper connection with my self-confidence and focus for the future. I knew that the Ayurvedic diet suited me for improved energy but also didn't want to trade off pure Ayurvedic ways in India with a lack of comfort and luxury.

On arrival to Vana, I felt truly handpicked to be part of the experience. The assault on the senses from travelling via Delhi was quickly left at the main entrance of Vana.

The entrance to Vana, you later come to realise, is so far from from the areas that you spend your days, it was designed to scoop up all the unwanted emotions, thoughts and feelings as you arrive, and gently let them evaporate away into the Himalayas as part of the Vana service!

During my 9 nights I've never experienced such incredible, discrete-elegance, perfection and deeply authentic guest-centric care, compassion and hospitality.

You immediately find the slowest gear you didn't think you possess, and are encouraged to flow with the melody of Vana. Strictly no phones, careful volume control and placement of your conversations mean that you and your fellow guests forget about invasion of each other's space, technology, cross fertilisation of life's junk on each other.

The purity of the Spanish designed estate, puts Vana into its own league. It feels like you are the first to use everything, like no one else has been before you, anywhere.

Surrounded by perfect green trees, immaculate gardens you have no option but to be mindful throughout your days. I would encourage you to do the Eco trail walk into the Himalayas, not only to experience the landscape like no other but for the deep connection and spiritual influence it may have on you. It's a time to lock down all that you have practiced and promised during your days at the Vana Estate.

Pre-thinking your Ayurvedic consultation will give you more than you could hope for. At the very least you will be in peace of mind that the final agenda is truly personalised, with the perfect food, treatments and the way you spend your days is worked to respond every little niggle in your head about your health and wellbeing. Be ready to have repeat treatments and try new experiences. The blend of the Tibetan, Ayurvedic and more well known spa treatments will deeply rebalance you. Some more luxury, some more functional, but each with rituals and carefully mastered traditions by the amazing (handpicked) practitioners, who all show compassion and care.

I've made connections with myself that are sustainable, I've connected with 5 people around the world who shared the space with me at Vana. This is helpful to reaffirm what you learnt and practiced weeks later. I have left fear and anxiety behind and breath better than I've ever done.

A true investment in your long term wellness. I'm back next year and have achieved more in my 7 weeks post-Vana than for the last 3 years in my life, thanks to letting go to unwanted energy and maintaining habits from Vana that I now couldn't live without.

Vana is a life experience, part of your life's journey.

Insider's Tips
  • Go with an open heart and mind, this is the best advise we can give you. You will learn much about yourself, and the more you give of yourself, the more you will take back from Vana.
  • Travel light, you get super comfy organic kurta pyjamas daily, so that’s one thing less to worry about.
  • There is a well stocked library at Vana, no need to take books either.
  • Try the morning Yoga and Om chanting with Dr Dhanraj, you will learn to love these morning rituals.
  • Dine at the communal table at mealtimes. Most evening you are joined by one of the Vana doctors or specialists, its fun and very informative.
  • Try the Raga therapy, this ancient music practice leads to deep relaxation and peacefulness.
  • Take a meditative walk in the yoga orchard, and enjoy the magical bird song.
  • Whilst it is recommended you go for a minimum of 5 days, we would suggest a minimum of 10, you will get much more from these extra five nights.
  • Visit Rishikesh and Haridwar, two of Hinduism’s holiest northern cities.
