Samahita - Review by Healing Holidays10/11/2018, Frances Geoghegan
Frances Geoghegan, Healing Holidays founder on why Samahita makes for an excellent yoga retreat.
Samahita is set on the south coast of Koh Samui, a 45-minute transfer from Koh Samui airport, on a long stretch of unspoiled beach. The location is truly dreamy, virgin white, palm-fringed sandy beaches, with a laidback island vibe. No spa that we currently feature in Thailand has a better or nicer location.
The main area, (where classes take place, and where food is served), is quite a compact area and is located on the opposite side of the road from the bedrooms and the treatment rooms.
The accommodation is not luxurious - it’s much more about comfort and a home from home vibe. The bedrooms are sparsely furnished – they have a bed, a writing desk and a bathroom with a shower –no baths. Each room has an outdoor area to sit and enjoy the chirping birds.
The food is homemade and kept natural, with ingredients sourced locally and organic with a good balance of ingredients. Food is mainly vegetarian, with some fish. It is served buffet style, so you serve your own food.
After you finish your food, you clean away your own dishes and use the various recycling boxes. There is also an a la carte menu, from where you can buy meals & drinks.
There is a strong community feel at Samahita, and it is sensational for all those who love or want to learn to love Yoga. Essentially people come to Samahita to go deeper into their Yoga and meditation journey. Many make the visit to see Paul Dalaghan, who is the owner, and a Yoga and meditation master.
The Yoga obsessed. Singletons and those who like to connect with other people and muck in.
Anyone who longs for conventional luxury, and for those who have no interest in Yoga, and want a fully serviced stay and to be waited on hand and foot.
Rooms - Look and Feel
Each of the 40 Rooms are basic and functional. The décor is muted greys and white, and the resort tries hard to be eco-friendly, using natural lighting, solar power and cross ventilation. You do have air-con though
What I Loved
I loved the location, which is like Thailand of old. No brash bars or neon signs in sight, just the gentle lapping of the waves. The treatments at the Spa were also excellent. The staff were all extremely friendly, and there is a wonderful family feel here.
What I Don't Rate
If you are not a Yoga nut, then this place is not for you. There are not enough alternatives to Yoga, not nearly enough Fitness activities, (normally just 1x cycle/spinning class & 1x core exercise class each day) and there is no gym at all.
