Curated retreats and programmes at Vana - May - Oct 2019


Experience a selection of curated retreats and programmes between May to October at Vana. The programmes, for the most part, can be done alongside your usual wellness treatments except a few which will require prior sign up. These fixed date retreats will be based on wisdom, arts, music, cuisine, literature and learning. Most programmes will run for 5 days and will begin either in the afternoon or evening of day 1 and finish by lunch on the last day. These programmes are optional and you can still visit Vana for one of their standard retreat types of Vana Ashram, Wellness and Lifestyle during the May-October period. 

New programmes will be announced so keep an eye on this page, or check in with our wellness advisors for any new programmes.

Ode to the Guru

An Ode to the Guru, is a musical homage to our spiritual traditions and Gurus. Each day, we will host devotional music performances or sessions with classical and folk artists, and spiritual practitioners, across musical genres and spiritual traditions.

Kabir, Kabir Kya Kare? - Shabnam Virmani

Explore the many moods and possibilities in Kabir, of love and resistance, joy and pathos, irony and tenderness, mystery and candour, even as Kabir mocks us for chanting his name! An immersion in the world of this 15th century mystic through his folk songs from the oral traditions of Malwa, Rajasthan and Kutch.

If you ask writers what distinguishes them from other writers, often the answer will be: voice. The question is: how to find your voice and how to find your vision. This residency will help you find your true voice. It will involve a lot of exercises, self-reflection, conversation and group activities.

Dou - Megumi Kawakami
6 July - 12 July 2019

At Vana, Japanese culture and wisdom have inspired us in many ways. In July of 2019, they will have the chance to explore some of these interests in greater depth through a series of events and workshops that will span a week, each day dedicated to a different tradition. This will include teaching the art of kintsugi, calligraphy, kyudo and origami in half-day workshops; alongside, we will also imbue the day with other creative genres and traditions from Japan – food, music, tea ceremonies, film and dialogues.

Path of the Urban Yogi 2019 - Albert Paeavi, June Crow and Kris Yao

This 4-day Short Retreat, plus a day each for arrival and departure, focuses on equipping the “urban yogi” with creative ways to integrate mindfulness and awareness into everyday life. Drawing inspiration from Theravāda, Mahāyāna, Zen and Tantra, these three long-time lay students of the dharma share techniques on how to bring the view, meditation, and action of the Buddhist path into work, love, relationship, and personal development.

Homage to Nusrat
9 October - 14 October 2019

This will be the second edition of our annual homage to the genius Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, arguably the greatest Qawwali singer of the 20th century.

As a tribute, we will organise five consecutive nights of music. During the day we will organise interactions with the performing artists, facilitate conversations around the devotional art form, and showcase films and concerts of the legendary performer. The dedicated music retreat is curated to delight a casual listener as it would a music connoisseur.

Weaving the Lights and Winds of India - Ganga Maki
16 October - 21 October 2019

After a successful 5 day retreat, last year showcasing the unique process of producing textiles - right from reeling silk from cocoons, art of dying with natural flowers and plants and, using the handloom to turn yarn into fabric - Chiaki Maki and her team will curate another special retreat this October!
