Forest Bathing: Nature's Healing Powers

18/09/2023, Healing Holidays

What exactly is Forest Bathing?

Originating in Japan where it is called Shinrin-yoku, literally meaning forest bathing, it is about bathing our senses rather than bathing our physical bodies. Practices are designed to take us out of our everyday lives and into the tranquillity of nature.

What are the benefits of Forest Bathing?

By taking part in such a practice we can become more mindful and present in the moment, allowing us to enjoy the stillness and beauty around us as well as focussing on our inner being. In addition to being great for mental health, forest bathing can also improve our physical health. According to a study by the University of Glasgow an increase in the amount of green space in a local area will lead to a corresponding decrease in early deaths amongst those aged under 65 years old. Other physiological benefits include lowered blood sugar levels and improved energy levels and cardiovascular health. Forest bathing is a great way to reduce stress and lift depression, but it’s also so much more than that. It allows us to connect with each other, with nature, and with ourselves in a deeper way. It brings us back to the present moment and helps us appreciate the beauty around us.
