Lanserhof Tegernsee Review
Healing Holidays founder, Frances Geoghegan, recently visited Lanserhof Tegernsee. Here is her review of the German medi-clinic.
Being a fan of the Mayr medical approach – make your gut work like clockwork, and better health will follow - I was extremely keen to try the spanking newest Mayr marvel; Lanserhof Tegernsee. It certainly lived up to its hype – it’s wildly beautiful, cool and understated. All gleaming glass and stone, white bare walls and light reflecting larch wooden floors. Every conceivable mod-con is in your remote-controlled sparkling bedroom; the most comfortable bed you will ever sleep in, showers so powerful they would lift you off the floor, a fire that springs to life at the flick of a switch, and a kettle that boils in seconds, and doesn’t make a sound. And what a view – wild rolling hills surrounded by thick forest covered in a blanket of snow. Exquisite.
I am here to do the Lans Med concept – a detox and de-acidification programme, tailored exclusively for me. Starting with a series of blood & urine tests and scans, there is lots of probing and focus on my stomach. My doctor is the highly acclaimed Dr Elke Bernedetto-Reisch, who is both stern and funny in equal measure. She tells me I am a tad overweight, (no surprise there - I have, after all, finally kicked my 20 year cigarette habit, so I have to do something with my hands), that my body is stressed, and that my chest is too high, (too inflated with air). I am put on the level 1 diet, which means less than 500 calories a day. Your day starts with epsom salts, also known as bitters, to aid with the detoxification process. You must never be too far from a toilet, you will learn this very quickly, as each day follows the same routine. Breakfast is spelt porridge with cinnamon, and some training spelt rolls - to ensure I chew incessantly. Lunch and dinner is a very thin light broth. For the first few days, I am very irritable and constantly hungry. I drink all sorts of hot teas which are available throughout the medical centre and in your room. It does get better after the first 2 days as you get used to the meagre rations.
The medical side of Lanserhof is as I would expect from one of Europe’s leading clinics – at the cutting edge of medical care. You can have a his and her full body MOT, you can swallow a pill which contains a minuscule camera that will tell you all about your intestines, and you can have comprehensive DNA and gene testing with a detailed interpretation by Dr Kubenz. It’s all there at Lanserhof. What I didn’t expect to be so good was the holistic side- I had fantastic cranial sacral treatments, really great deep massages, and very sensible fitness training with Oliver. There is a huge range of beauty treatments on offer too, and daily classes offering walks in the beautiful countryside, zumba, yoga etc. Most evenings there are lectures, cookery classes or even classical concerts. You won’t be bored. At the end, you will shed those pounds, feel brighter and more energetic, and you will learn to slow down the pace, take note of how and what you eat, and start looking and feeling like yourself again.
